Heading into Week 8 of the NFL season, the Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis Colts are now 0-7.
A solid debate took place last night in the ManCave on how good the Colts could be based on their 2011 Schedule with a healthy Manning. What are your thoughts?

This league is full of fans who have the worst case nig-nesia. (def: Ignorant people who base entire football theories and player’s careers off 16 games or less, and forget about the past). Peyton Manning is arguably the BEST QUARTERBACK TO EVER PLAY THE GAME. In a down AFC South, coupled with the fact that weeks 3,4, and 5 were winnable games WITHOUT Manning, its no question this team would be gearing up for another deep playoff run. The Colts would be very good with Manning, so good to the point we would possibly 5-2 at worst at this point in the season.
I agree with you Richan, at the worse…they could be 5-2 and possibly 6-1 with an week 1 win over the Texans…and quite frankly to finish the season they could have easily gone 7-2 IMO…and yes, we have never seen a QB with the capabilities of Peyton, he is an on field offensive coordinator!
Colts would definitely be at least 5-2 so far this season. I agree with both of you there, but however I think they would make the same average playoff run they have been doing for awhile. Great in the regular season but just “ok” in the post season. This is because of their lack of defense. Although their offense is absolutely nothing without Peyton. Peyton gets hurt does that give the defense the right to play this bad? The reason Manning doesn’t have more rings in my opinion is simply because his defense has never been able to make that one stop that gets you over the hump.
The Colts focus on nothing else besides Peyton Manning has been their Achilles heal, and it will continue to be until they realize that no matter how many points you score your defense must get on the field.
A washed up Cowboys squad last year beat the Manning and the Colts. Why? Our defense made two plays that carried us over in that game. Mind you Jon Kitna was our QB. Colts defense regardless of what Manning can do, will always hurt the Colts.
What’s the point of scored 35 if you going to give up 42?
5-2??? This fraudulent Colt team would be 4-3 at best my friends. While Peyton is the one of the best QBs in the league and makes the whole team go, there is a reason why football is the ultimate team game. Can anyone name the Colts last three first round picks? Is Donald Brown even alive? Outside of Freeney and Mathis, I don’t know anyone on the Colts defense.
Why I don’t think the Colts would be that good with Manning is because the Colts are TERRIBLE without him. If this team was any good they would have a win right now. You can’t beat the Browns at home? You can’t hold a 17-point lead to the Chiefs…AT HOME??? Peyton Manning doesn’t play safety last I checked.
The Colts have a lack of talent in their team. Manning hid those problems until good playoff teams exposed it in the playoffs. This is an even worse Colt team this year, than from years past. You can’t get mollywhopped 62-7 to anybody. Even the terrible Rams held the Packers to a 24-point win. This Colt team is diddlypoo, Manning would just put lipstick in this fat pig of a team.
You want us to name the last 3 first round picks…how about we name the last 8 or 9…there won’t be many household names for us to mention. Considering they pick in the later rounds on a yearly basis, their strategy is to select the players that fit the system first. They’ve never hit a homerun with any of their picks over the past…ehhhhh, 10 years to be frank. It’s always players that develop into household names based on their play.
Next, I don’t think you understand how teams play the Manning Colts. Opposing offenses want to keep Manning OFF the field, therefore they try to manage games to do so because they know when Manning does get on the field the chances of the Colts scoring are very probably. Now teams have no problem paying the Colts for 60 minutes. Opposing teams take more chances at the defense making them more vulnerable.
But check this out too…Manning plays the same game opposing offense play on them. He is the best game manager this league has EVER seen. He knows his defense sucks, but what does he do…he keeps them off the field…and guess what, when the opposing team comes back on the field, they’re playing from behind, they have to pass and so the colts can unleash 2 of the best pass rushers in the league.
Possessions and Time of Possessions are cut in half when Manning is on the field…take a deep analysis look into it…the facts are there…he alone makes this team an entirely different team!
Yeah he makes the team different…he takes a 2-14 team to a 10-6 team. I AM NOT SLIGHTING MANNING AT ALL!!! I am saying the Colts around him are terrible.
You give an excuse for the Colts drafting late, that’s why they dont get household names. I’m sorry, the Steelers have picked late for years and they are consistently a top 5 team. Patriots too. Eagles as well. So I did research the last 5 1st round picks for the Colts
2011 – Anthony Castonzo OL obviously on the team
2010 – Jerry Hughes DE, 10 tackles, 1 sack IN TWO YEARS (17 games played)
2009 – Donald Brown, RB, Need I say more
2008 – No pick
2007 – Anthony Gonzalez WR, Steve Smith number 2 went later in the 2nd round
The Colts are not built properly. Manning hides their flaws as you have said. Someday that will catch up to you (like Baltimore Defense couldn’t hide the Ravens flaws the entire decade). I’m saying that day of reckoning would have been this year because there is a lack of talent on this team.
Patriots and Steelers picks from last 5 years please…since you mentioned them
Renz….dont talk about Steelers draft picks, it will only help Yans argument…theyre pretty spot on every year lol
The Colts are definitely not built properly. You have a back up QB who essentially doesn’t know your system because there was so much focus on Manning as if he found the fountain of youth. Whether it be through the draft of free agency the colts have never addressed their defense or as skerv says everyone else surrounding Peyton. Manning is undoubtedly one of the best to ever do it, but imagine the jewelry he would have if he was surrounded by players on his level!
No matter how long Manning holds the ball or manages the TOP. At some point their defense must TAKE THE FIELD! Not saying you need a great one, but you do need a people who can compete.
We may go in on the Colts 1st rounders all day, but their entire team is built through the draft. There has been no focus on high profile free agents to come in there and yes the system is built all around Manning and they have allowed it to be their achilles heel, but that of course has turned on them…
But let’s keep it funky, put Curtis Painter on Green Bay team…what would their record be? Because quite frankly, Colts and Packers are the exact same team w/o their franchise QBs…
And to present day point, the Colts defense is constantly on the field these days and have played very solid, but if your offense cant do anything…you can’t point all the fingers at them (see Steelers game).
