Studs & Scrubs Week 6 – The Recession

Posted: October 19, 2011 by LBC in NFL, Studs & Scrubs

Week 6 was another eventful week for the sport that can resolve lockouts. There  is no greater feeling than watching and talking football in your ManCave. I’ll save my thoughts of ManCave heaven for later you want the Studs and Scrubs.

Studs!

All smiles in Tampa

1. First we have the up and coming  superstar, Josh Freeman. Freeman has been playing very well since last season, and with every week looks as if he is locking down the franchise QB spot in Tampa Bay. He seems to go under the radar since he doesn’t produce eye popping number like a Aaron Rodgers. When you watch this guy you can see he has those leadership intangibles, and wants the football in his hands in the clutch. Last week he defeated Drew Brees in a game the Bucs needed to win. He went 23/41 for 303 yds and 2 TD. The young curly bush wearing Freeman outplayed SuperBowl champion Drew Brees. Freeman is well on his way to becoming one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. You don’t get a lot of credit in my opinion Josh, but TheManCave06 recognizes you this week as an NFL STUD!

2. Take a trip down to ATL with me and recognize Michael Turner RB of the Falcons. In a season where the so called leader Matty “Ice” Ryan is still trying to find his rhythm, just rely on Turner should be the theme in ATL. It was time for Turner to step up and give the Falcons the consistent running game Matty needs to be successful. Turner ran through opposing tackles on his way to 139 yards and 2 TD. Turner is an excellent every down back who will do nothing but produce positive yardage with his combination of speed and power. If ATL wants back in the playoffs just keep relying on NFL STUD Michael Turner.

3. As much as it pains me to say this, but I want to personally thank Mendenhall for showing the Steelers what has earned them those Superbowl rings. You did not win those on the arm of Big Ben, but on the legs of your work horse backfield. Mendenhall rushed for 146 yards and 1 TD. The key to Pittsburgh success is to keep the football out of Ben’s hands and give it to Mendenhall. When he was hurt Redman of the Steelers made the presence of Mendenhall irrelevant the way he played. Not to be shown up Mendenhall ran the way his coach loves him to run, hard causing pain to the opposing defense. Congrats Mendenhall just keep playing like that, and the Steelers may have a chance to surprise people in the playoffs. NFL STUD!

Scrubs!

1. Donovan McFlabb welcome to the recession. Well maybe not a monetary recession for you, but you have been benched….. AGAIN! Your career is on a slippery slope even your mother has given up hope. My last memories of McNabb are him not knowing the overtime rules, getting benched in Washington, and whatever you call that 36 yard performance he had earlier this season. McNabb you didn’t play terrible, but you are the suppose veteran on the team you need to do better. Please read dontbeskerritt spill on McFlabb Overreaction Monday. Enough of that McFlabb you are an NFL BENCHED 2ND STRING SCRUB!!!! McRib > McLobster > McFlurry > McNabb

2.                                     Before you read this I need you to watch this.

Ok that should let you know that my next scrub is “Gross Rexman”. His pathetic play has been overshadowed by a stout defense, but when you look closer at the statistics. Grossman has 9 INT this season and 6 TD. He has only surpassed an 80.0 passer rating one time this season. In Sundays game he threw 4 picks, and the only reason he didn’t throw 8, 9, or 10 is because he was benched! I am not hating here just simply stating the facts. I am not sure what is going on with Grossman, and its a shame he will never find out either. You and McFlabb can become best friends because both of you will now doing forearm exercises to hold on to that clip board. Welcome to the recession you are an NFL SCRUB!

3. Is the Tampa Bay defense that good? According to Drew Brees it is. As he threw 3 picks and finished with a 70.9 QB rating. This was simply an off week for you, but after this game I realize how much you need Payton on the sideline with you. Sean Payton is the mastermind that makes you the Superbowl champion you are. However, this week you played disgraceful. It’s only disgraceful because I know how well you can play. No matter the situation you have no excuse to just plain “ol” suck. This week Drew Brees you are an NFL SCRUB!

Did Raiders Trade Future for Palmer?

Posted: October 18, 2011 by RenzReport in NFL

This is definately worthy of a #pause

In light of the news of Carson Palmer’s trade to the Oakland Raiders, one would think the 4-2 Cincinnati Bengals have learned something from how the Philadelphia Eagles run their organization?  Instead of succumbing to Palmer’s demands to be traded, the Bengals obtained his rights by not forcing their hand.  Instead, Palmer said he would retire before he took another snap for the Bengals.  Bengals ownership told him to grab his fishing pole and enjoy life!

Well, as seen from past posts, we here at TheManCave06 have ripped both Palmer and the Bengals organization.  Now the Bengals will receive a 1st round pick in 2012 and a conditional 1st rounder in 2013 from Oakland in return for Palmer.  Can we say that the Bengals are winning in this deal?

The Bengals organization finds themselves in a great position, considering that they have found their QB of the future in Andy Dalton and have a good young receiver in AJ Green.

Trading Palmer this off-season would not have warranted 2 – #1′s (as seen by the Eagles who received 2nd round picks for McNabb and Kolb) but when teams get desperate as Oakland has with the injury to starter Jason Campbell for potentially the entire season, the pickings for a starting caliber QB are slim and comes at a high price.

With the trade, Oakland now only has a 5th and 6th round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, but are betting on compensation picks for the lossing Nnamdi and Robert Gallery this in free-agency.  Let’s just hope that the Raiders are happy with what they have on the field now, because there won’t be much of an opportunity to improve in the upcoming draft.

He Gross, man, but lets give him a Break.

Posted: October 17, 2011 by arayegee in NFL

"But if you sack me, how am I going to throw another pick to your guys?"

Yesterday we witnessed Rex Grossman go 9/22 for 143yards in a 20-13 home loss to the struggling Philadelphia Eagles. In theory he went 13/22 but the other four completions went to Eagles players, which means he threw about half as many balls to Philly defenders as he did to his own targets. I will make this very clear: he deserved to be benched. Shanaham even gave him the entire 3rd quarter to get his act together before realizing this game would not be winnable with Rex taking snaps. Backup quarterback Beck came in to lead the Redskins offense to an 80 yard touchdown that made the game interesting in the end, the Redskins’ only touchdown of the day.

The game wasn’t even over before the the Grossman slander that ensued on every media outlet began. People were comparing this man to JaMarcus Russell (n*gga, WHAT?!), and the fans at FedEx stadium along with every Redskins fan completely turned on the guy. We have what looks to be the beginning of a quarterback controversy. I am here to tell you that there should be no controversy at all…Rex Grossman, for now, should be the starter.

Many people know that history tends to repeat itself, and it seems like this is what happening in Washington. In 1994, the starting Redskins quarterback was a hotshot SEC quarterback taken in the first round, only to realize he was NOT the person for the job. Then in 1996, Then-Redskins coach, one who might have been in over his head to begin with, pulled him to put in……Gus Frerotte.

Two years later in 1998 neither quarterback was on the roster.

Looking back on that decision, it may have been the best at the time, but what good did pulling Heath really do? Dont worry, Ill wait.

Rex by no means is the long term answer for the season, but we know what we are getting with him.  He has his faults, but he also went up against two of the top 15 defenses in the league (Dallas, Arizona). Taking him out and putting Beck is getting the Redskins what exactly? A quarterback who may be more athletic, but hasnt played in a snap since 2007? Lets see how much scrambling John Beck wants to do after he takes his first real NFL hit.  The same quarterback that lost the preseason quarterback battle to Rex? So NOW he’s better than Rex? Switching quarterback midseason is a sign of instability, which is the very thing Redskins fans should be tired of by now.Just because something is different doesnt mean its better.

Lets look at the big picture, people. Its really hard to throw four interceptions in one game, so lets not assume a performance like this will ever happen again. A few weeks ago, this quarterback threw four 2nd half interceptions in a loss to a divisional opponent. Now, if this quarterback hadn’t been named Tom Brady, he would have been roasted in the media. Fortunately for the NFL’s Golden Boy, the Bills ‘opportunistic defense’ got the credit (insert the most obscene sarcastic remark you can think of).  Brady choked, plain and simple. Yes, he threw four touchdowns, but it was his INTs that took the Patriots out of the game. Rex Grossman choked, as well. While his career resume is full of gag-reflex incidents, hes also the only quarterback in the NFC East with a playoff record above .500 other than Eli Manning. Call it what you want, but those are the stats.

Too many times this franchise has made knee jerk reactions, and every single time it ended up biting them in the rear end. I as a Redskins fan, dont want us to lose at the expense of a quarterback we didnt even believe in to start the season. We are in year 2 of the rebuilding process. The problem with this process could be Grossman, but the solution sure isn’t Beck. Lets give the man some time to recoup next week. If he’s still playing like garbage against the Bills, then consider the article a waste of time.

Overreaction Monday: Week 6 Edition

Posted: October 17, 2011 by dontbeskerritt in NFL

Well, well, it’s not just the fans that overreact to football.  Here are three thoughts from a rough-and-tumble Week 6.

1. The NFC Least

Let it be known I am an NFC East homer.  It will always be the most competitive division to me; maybe not the best, but the most competitive.  This year, the NFC East is definitely not the best division this year, but people are saying the division is as bad as than the NFC West last year.  Are you kidding me?  Shock tweeters have infiltrated the Monday Morning QBs.  On Sunday, we saw the Cowboys play the Patriots tough (and arguably should have won if Jason Garrett throws to Dez Bryant instead of running with Tashard Choice, wouldn’t you?).  The Giants hung on to beat a very real Bills team without their defensive captain Justin tuck.  The Eagles are back on track and I declared on Friday that I think this team will make the playoffs.  The Skins will be competitive and thanks to a down NFC, will be in the mix for the 6th playoff spot.  People overreact to the down swings all of the time, especially in this division.  But if you dissect these squads, at least half of the teams have the talent to be in the upper echelon of the NFC and Dallas has a chance to be a sneaky pick to come out of the mess and face Green Bay.  So calm down about the NFC; sure you probably won’t see an 11 or 12 win team this year.  But I think that speaks to the parity of the division with teams matching each other on the field.

2. Putting 5 Out to Pasture

You ever go to play ball and there is this one old man there?  He has the same 1 or 2 unstoppable moves, he is crafty around the boards and wily with his passes.  However, he ain’t running the fast break.  He ain’t switching on defense or setting any picks.  He has his game and will get you a set amount of points, but you probably aren’t going to win with this guy.  Ladies and gentlemen, meet the 2011 Donovan McNabb.  Now I used to be a #5 fan, but I have been soured after I tasted the Chunky Soup for a year (actually 13 games) last year.  However, it is a crime that people are trying to put McNabb in the nursing home this year.  Hell, even McNabb’s mother has walked out on her son’s 13th season.

But let’s look at McNabb’s final numbers for the night yesterday; 19-24 for 177 yards.  Again, the old man game numbers.  Solid, but you can’t win with them.  More numbers; he actually has a 60.3% completion rate, which is not bad for a QB.  His team probably should be 4-2, if not 5-1.  I don’t know what the problem is with the Vikings, but I know McNabb isn’t one of them.  He gives them the best chance to win, even though his teammates are not responding to his old man game.  His best receiver option is Bernard Berrian, not Sidney Rice.  His coaches don’t give All-Day Adrian Peterson the pill for some reason.  But yet, McNabb takes the blame for everything even though I see him putting his team in a position to win more often than not.

3. COACH FIGHT

I don’t know about you but I LOVED THAT COACH FIGHT on Sunday.  Captain Comeback Jim Harbaugh (one of my favorite players growing up) saw his boys the 49ers get a comeback of their own in the hostile environment that is Ford Field in Detroit.  Excited that his team legitimized its 5-1 record, he gave an overexuberant hand shake to coach Jim Schwartz.  I’m sorry I love my coach actually being happy that they won. I love Harbaugh’s response that gave “too hard of a handshake,” a tongue-and-cheek shot at Schwartz to suck it up and take your L.  Harbaugh has been a d-bag before; ask Pete Carroll when both were coaching at Stanford.  Look at the players when they were love tapping each other going to the locker room; they absolutely loved it that their coach was rumbling out there, just like they had been for 60 minutes.  I also love Schwartz going after Harbaugh and standing up for himself, even though Schwartz had been jawing at people all this year so he gets a taste of his own medicine.

This is my stance on over-emotional coaches; if you are smart and a winner, you can do whatever you want.  I’m running through brick walls for Rex Ryan and Jim Harbaugh right now.  Hell, someone in the AFC East (Dolphins cough, cough) needs to hire Rob Ryan to fire their franchise up and to stop Tom Brady every 2 games.  Coaches inspire you; they get you to take your game to another level.  That was the knock on Dungy for a while, he was to level-headed and laid back to get his team to elevate themselves for the big game.  Right now Harbaugh has his team elevated to heights that nobody expected this year.  Because of how his team is playing, we could get Coach Fight, Part 2 down in the bay in January.

We haven’t talked about hockey on this site…to tell the truth we probably won’t talk about it a lot.  But when you have great video like this you have to share it.  So in honor of the ManCave 100th post, here is some hockey video.  On those cold December nights when there is no NBA, don’t be afraid to turn on the hockey game.  You might see something like this!  Thanks for supporting the ManCave06.

When Your Best Moment is an Upset Win Over WVU, Something is Wrong

This is a piece that describes the intersection of our expectations and realities.  I got to this intersection after watching Pitt put up a woeful effort at Rutgers, losing 34-10 with our new “high-octane” offense.  At this intersection, which is usually the case in these situations, is Heartbreak Hotel.  We realize that what we had hyped up in our heads for so long is not nearly as beautiful and glamorous as we made it out to be.  As a fan of Pitt Athletics from 2003 until today, I have been honored to be a part of the golden age of Pitt Athletics with Wide Receiver U on the football side, and the success of the basketball team in the Pete on the other.  But with Homecoming for Pitt coming this weekend, I decided that I will come to terms with the fact that   We will always cling to the tradition of our programs (9 National Championships, 8 from before World War II).  But we will always be average, mundane, and just good enough.  I’ll break it down using the two main sports: football this week and basketball next week.

In 2003, I had the honor to cover the Pitt football team for the Panther Sports Network.  I watched Larry Fitzgerald dominate at Texas A&M and catch the game-winning pass in the Virginia Tech game (greatest and coldest game I have ever attended).  But I also saw this team blow games to West Virginia (before they became the WVU of today) and get embarrassed by Miami.  ”That’s alright,” I thought, “we will play better for my time at Pitt, even without Fitz.”  That’s how confident I was, how naive I became as a Pitt fan.

The next season, we actually made a BCS bowl, thanks to a terrible Big East without Miami, where an 8-4, 4-2 record helped us get to the Fiesta bowl.  It was the “I love my f*cking football team” Tyler Palko era now.  The Tyler Palko that Pitt chose over…wait for it…Joe Flacco.   Anyway, it didn’t matter because our entire team didn’t belong on that BCS field in 2005 and Utah made sure we knew that.  But with the Loser, I mean the ‘Stache Dave Wannstedt coming into town, I still believed.

At the Meineke Car Care Bowl - 2009

I don’t want to dwell on the ‘Stache era for too long.  To Wannstedt’s credit, he recruited some of the best talent Pitt ever; LeSean McCoy, Dion Lewis, Jonathan Baldwin, Jabaal Sheard.  They had a Top 15 finish in 2009 and won the Meineke Car Care Bowl.  They even kept WVU from the National Championship game in 2007…which goes to show you how average things have been at Pitt when you celebrate upset wins over your rivals.

We went to the Sun Bowl in 2008; we lost 3-0.  One of the best teams we ever had at Pitt hosted Cincinnati in 2009 for the Big East title and a BCS bid on the line, we lost 45-44 thanks to a missed extra point.  You heard that right.  And that game came after we could have sealed a BCS bid the week prior but we lost to WVU.  In Wannstedt’s last season, we got blown out at home twice (one to Jacory Harris and Miami, the other to WVU), and lost to frikkin UCONN.  Oh yeah, Donald Brown wasn’t on that UCONN team.  Now we have Todd Graham; and while I was excited that Wannstedt is gone, I slowly come to realize this will be a rebuilding year.  What’s painful is that this team destroyed a ranked South Florida squad, but blew games to Iowa (who lost to Penn State which has no QB) and got run over by Rutgers last week.

These Days May Be Long Gone

I blame my heartbreak on my expectations for Pitt.  While the Pittsburgh area has lots of great talent, talent that chooses to come to Pitt at times, Penn State is still the king of Pennsylvania.  They will always get the most talent from the state.  Ohio State, Michigan, and WVU also steals other recruits that choose to state up north.  But the best of the best go south.  Who wants to go to Pitt, where the football tradition has fallen off with games at Heinz Field instead of old Pitt Stadium, and your playing in miserable weather instead of the sunny south.  Pitt can get lucky to get an up-and-coming coach and a great recruiting class, but it feels like those days have passed us by.  It feels like our program will never have the juice that it takes to become a national championship contender. Pitt is now safely nestled into the slot of programs that can get on ESPN2 consistently, but they will never be the marquee program its fans think that it can be.  Pitt is in the ranks of schools like Maryland, Clemson, NC State, Auburn (before the championship), and Texas A&M.  We will always be the little brother to other schools close by; we will get lucky one year (Auburn), and be down the next (Maryland). But you can always be sure that the Panthers will always be just good enough to let you down.

After the video, it’s the ManCave Lineup for the weekend.  My trap game of the week is Philadelphia vs Washington.  I know Philly is favored, but this game is the trap for the Skins.  In fact, I’m declaring today; I don’t know how they’ll do it, or what their record will be, but the Philadelphia Eagles will make the playoffs.  Fight me if you must, but I believe in this Eagles squad that is 4th in the NFL in total offense.  I believe in Andy Reid and Michael Vick.  And if you believe that this isn’t the biggest reverse jinx in the history of the Mancave, you’re crazier than I am.  Actually, let me stop panicking, my Skins got this!  Oh by the way, LET’S GO PITT!

As always, bold is for the game on the main TV, italics is for the game on your 720p backup TV, and regular is for the game on the TV you stole out of Motel 6.

Battlefield 3 is released on 10/25/2011

Watch the Trailer

We at TheManCave06 recommend that you have an awesome TV with full 1080p blu ray capability at your disposable. You wonder why? This is one post of many that will explain to you why we suggest this as the only option for your ManCave. It may seem very primitive, but we men are aggressive and we all enjoy some sort of violence. It is a manlaw, we don’t ask questions we just accept it. Battlefield 3 will appease that appetite. Battlefield 3 will be an amazing game to add to the collection in your cave. Not only because of the complexity the game will bring, but also the graphics along with that great surround sound system you have this game will be sure to turn your ManCave into an amazing Battlefield. If you are the type of person who enjoys a strategy, and a little thought/tactics put into how you would kill someone in a war. This is the game for you. Many new features, and weapons, have been added and this is expected to be one of the games of the year! Ladies I know you are feeling really neglected during this time, but don’t worry your time will come. If you are not at a loss of words after playing this game, I at least guarantee you will be at a lost of words just on how amazing the game looks and sounds in that ManCave. I hope you enjoy the extended gameplay and the new and improved online play in this game. TheManCave06 recommends Battlefield 3.

Studs & Scrubs Week 5

Posted: October 13, 2011 by LBC in Just Turrible, NFL

After another eventful week in the NFL as some trends are starting to develop. The season already is not turning out how we predicted in our previous post *jordan shrug*. Just keep reading we got more to say.

STUDS!

1. In a highly anticipated Jets vs Pats game I wondered would Brady throw for 300+ and 4 TD’s torching the overhyped Jets secondary? Nope that is not what happened but BenJarvus Green-Ellis who ran through the Jets defense once again exposing Rex Ryan’s front 7 or lack there of. I completely expected the Patriots to win the game, but not in this fashion. Green-Ellis plowed through the Jets defense with 27 carries for 136 yards and 2 TD. It is nearly impossible to stop an offense when they have the running game going, and that is what Green-Ellis provided the Patriots. He was able to carry the work load, and provide the physicalness the Patriots needed against an aggressive Jets defense. The Patriots every week are looking better and better. With Brady calling the offense, and if Green-Ellis can keep running the ball the way he did this past Sunday watch out! NFC you will meet them Pats in Indy. Congrats to the guy with an awful first name kajfldksjls, I mean BenJarvus Green-Ellis congrats this week you are an NFL STUD!

Move b! get out the way!2. It is about time the Vikings figured out that the key to winning lies on the legs of AP, and not that noodle arm of Donovan McRib. The Vikings played the Arizona Cardinals last sunday which allowed AP to score 3 times in the first quarter. Pathetic on the part of their defense. AP finished the day off with 29 carries for 122 yards and 3 TD. Not only did he make fantasy owners happy with this performance, but he also made many fans rejoice. Watching AP terrorize defenses is a thing of beauty unless he is playing your favorite team. We all know he is capable of doing this, but in the past two years the Vikings ownership  showed more faith in Favre, and forgot they were built on the back of that beast created from a lab in “Sector 7” Adrian Peterson. AP thanks for showing the Vikings who really needs the football in their hands, congrats this week you are an NFL STUD!

3. No matter how an interception or fumble happens they all show up in the stat book the same way, as turnovers. The Bills defense found a way to force 5 turnovers against the nightmare having Eagles. Vick through 4 picks and Maclin added a key fumble to the turnover stats. You can say the picks were tipped balls or whatever excuse you decide to use to make yourself sleep at night. The fact is, the Eagles are playing like poop, and Bills defense proved it again. Led by leading tackler George Wilson with 11 solo tackles the Bills were well prepared for Vick. Once again the only contribution this electrifying quarterback had was he electrified the opposing defense. Congrats to the Bills defense doing what they are suppose to do, this week you are NFL Studs!

Please don't hit me! they don't call flags!

SCRUBS!

1. “Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you gonna get” This reminds me of the irony that is Eli Manning. When he steps on the field you never know whether you will get Eli Manning the SuperBowl champion that is related to Peyton Manning or “that other guy”. Unfortunately, for the Giants “that other guy” showed up, throwing 3 picks, one lost fumble, and one interception was a game sealing pick 6! The same person that can make you smile is the same one that can make you cry. Eli looked atrocious losing to the Seahawks who were led by the anomaly that is Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst. The Giants are currently 3-2, second in the NFC East, hosting Buffalo next week. They do not need “that other guy” showing up next week before heading into their bye week. So get your mind right lil Eli because this week you are an NFL Scrub!

2. Next we have a group of scrubs. Now I am not exactly sure who to blame, so I will blame everyone! Tampa Bay played despicable, insulting, stupid football on Sunday. Your offense only scored 3 points and your defense gave up 48. The 49ers have a good team this year see post by dontbeskerrit, Football Friday. However, the 49ers are not that good. Josh Freeman we believe in you kid, but a total passer rating of 43.4 with two picks is “just turrible”. Just as a heads up you cannot have your team on an emotional roller coaster when it concerns your play. To the Tampa defense can we not make Alex Smith look like a 49ers legend? He is no Montana and no Young. However, along with letting Gore rush for 125 yards you let him go Brees on you and throw for 3 TD. That just can’t happen if you plan on making the NFC playoffs. TheManCave06 says get your act toegether, but for this week you are NFL SCRUBS!

3. This last group is a particular group of players that have been in question all season. I am referring to the Chicago Bears offensive line. If you were able to watch the MNF game, you saw Cutler running for his life on every single play. During this game I saw Cutler get hit on a handoff!??? The Bears offensive line played terrible. Although I am not a fan of Cutler after seeing that live I cannot blame him for everything. His O line is horrendous. I am now convinced if you want to get paid millions to do nothing go try out for the Bears O line. If the Bears have aspirations for the playoffs they need to address that major concern or Cutler will die before he sees week 16. TheManCave06 asks the Bears can you wake up before your QB gets killed, and for this week you are NFL Scrubs.
